Living sustainably in Leitrim - visits, courses & handbooks

Postby sallygardens on Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:30 pm

Hi

I'm Rebecca. I live in Leitrim on our smallholding 'Sallygardens'. We've been here for 2 years now and have pigs, goats, bees, chickens, oak wood plantation, biofuel willow coppice and a polytunnel. Life is busy!

Our learning curve has been exponential! We offer what we have learned to others via small courses around our kitchen table with a maximum of 4 people, so it stays small and informal. If you can't attend a course, we will be putting our course handouts for sale on our blog site in the next couple of months.

I write about whats going on every few days on our blog (website diary) 'Sallygardens', call in and comment on any of the posts. www.sallygardens.typepad.com

Looking forward to visiting this forum in the future.
Rebecca

Thanks. I'm hoping to start a little forum for smallholders linked to my blog site too.

I'll be adding your blog link to my blogroll too, great to find you. Love your blog, the motor posts are great, quirky .... do you have a thing about cars?!

lost dog

Postby inishindie on Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:41 am

Hi Sallygardens, Rebecca

Thanks for the add on!

I fell into the car thing.
I fell into writing for the local paper too.

I lost my dog and went to the paper to put an advert in to find her. I got talking to the owner at the time and he suggested that I did a gardening article.

I was in the business growing plants anyway so I started the Up the Garden Path article. I then started to write about environmental issues around the peninsula. The column was called Clean and Green and ran for five years until the new owners of the paper took over. It just seemed to fade away. I think the main reason was that environmental issues were more mainstream and I found I was playing catch up all of the time trying to keep up with new innovations.

Tha Me and My Motor came about because I happened to mention that the paper didn't have a car section. Me and my big mouth! I do enjoy it though, although it is at loggerheads with eco stuff. I do write about alternative travel sometimes!!

We found the dog by the way. She has herself new owners (they loved her so much we let them keep her) She now sleeps infront of the fire, shares the new owners bed and goes golfing everyday! There's a dog that knew what she was doing!

Cheers

Ian

Hi and the same felicitations from me too.

Have you still got the three little piggies on your blogsite header?
One kind word can warm three winter months.

Yes they are still on the banner, but now live in the freezer, and two more little piggies and roaming the woods at the moment
:D

Merry Christmas all
